One of the first thing that I noticed in Lion was the huge font in the Finder sidebar, which IMHO makes the whole Finder window look very ugly:
The size of the font can be quite easily changes, but the option shows up in a not so obvious location; under the General preferences window within your System Preferences:
If you change the “Sidebar icon size” to Small, your sidebar should start looking something like:

Thanks for this makes it much more presentable
Thanks – I’ve been looking how to do this for a while. Simples when you know how.
Thanks, just what I was looking for after Lion “blew up” my sidebar.
Thank you for this! It’s been driving me nuts since I updated. It looks SO much better now.
sweet. looking for this as well until I came across your post. thanks!
This has the added benefit of reducing the ridiculous large font size of Mailbox Names in the new Mail.
Great. Thanks very much, Navin.
Really appreciate it – this was eye jarring every time I dealt with the dialog. I am happy now. Thanks.
perfect advice
Funny, because one of my complaints about OS X is that I can’t increase the size of the Finder font (or Safari bookmarks font) past the preset maximum.
Not all of us have 20/20 vision.

Teeks go the the view menu in the Finder and you can increase Finder Window font size. You can also use Zoom under Universal Access.
Thanks! The large text looked really out of place. Now it looks normal.
Very helpful – was one of the first things that annoyed me after the update!
Thanks for this. I had been searching and searching wondering why my Finder was in Crayola-mode.
thank you very much
Wow, thanks. So much better!
Thanks for pointing this out. Another peeve with Lion is the overuse of low-contrast fonts in key parts of applications like iCal and Address Book. For example, in Address Book, on the “Card” page, the titles of the fields are so low contrast that they are hard to read if there is any glare on the screen. And in iCal, in the Week view, other than the current day, the date is hard to read under office lighting conditions.
This is beside the fact that they make poor use of screen real estate. Address book is just plain ugly on a Mac screen. Not all iOS notions translate nicely to the Mac…
thank you!
is there anything i can get to use in word so that I can change the font size a few times e.g. when I’m writing notes and want to express important words with much bigger letters … I used to be able to do it in windows and I’m frustrated that I can’t in my new Lion Mac help ???
Hi Gemma,
Not too sure on what you mean. If you’re looking for how to increase the font size on Word for Mac, you just need to select the word(s) you want and increase the number on the font section on the top. If you can’t see the font section, make sure you’ve clicked on the “Home” tab on the top; the font section should then appear on the top left.
Hope this helps!
